HAIL DAMAGE FAQ

What is hail?

Hail is essentially Ice in the shape of a ball or rock. It falls from the sky with a vengeance to wreak chaos on anything it touches. Hailstones can ruin your car and your whole day.

How big does hail have to get to cause damage to my car?

Hailstones that grow larger than the size of a quarter or even a nickel can potentially cause damage to a vehicle. However, the size isn't the only factor contributing to the overall automotive hail damage. Other things to consider are the materials making up your car (mainly the car body and windows/windshield) and the direction the hail falls.

If you have an older vehicle, it's probably made of heavier metal and thus has a better chance of being more resistant to hail damage. Steel and iron car bodies (found in older cars) are way more resilient but not as common as aluminum bodies, which are seen in more modern vehicles and are more prone to dents.

Does auto insurance cover hail damage?

Your policy most likely covers damage caused by rogue hail storms. Most insurance policies include comprehensive coverage with or alongside collision coverage. Ask your agent if needed.

What can I do to protect my car from hail storms?

If you are lucky enough to have a garage or covered parking space then you won't need to worry much about car hail damage. But some of us aren't so fortunate. Whether you're in an apartment complex without covered parking or at the office in Boulder, your vehicle is vulnerable if the hailstones start falling.

You can prepare your car for hellish hailstones by purchasing special car covers made for their specific make and model or, to avoid extra cost, you can monitor the weather reports and feel free to get a little creative with your car protection. If you see a big hail storm is a'brewin, before it takes a toll on your neighborhood, grab some old blankets out of your closet and completely cover your vehicle in them. Make sure they are secure by folding the ends of the blankets inside and under the doors, trunk and hood of your car. It may seem ridiculous but if your car is out in the open, those blankets can help reduce the amount of damage the hailstones try to dole out.

Does repaired car hail damage affect vehicle value?

As with any other kind of damage, hail dents can certainly lower the value of a vehicle during re-sale. If you file a claim through your insurance, it will be listed on the vehicle's history report. However, the devaluation should be nominal if you've gone through the correct channels to get the hail damage repaired. That means visiting a certified auto body center for dent removal.

How does a body shop repair hail damage on a car?

Most auto body shops use modern Paintless Dent Repair equipment to pull dents out and restore your car's natural shimmer. If the hail has damaged the paint, the area will be sanded down and a new coat of paint will be applied. If the damage is substantial they may have to replace the entire panel or bumper if it's more cost-effective. They will also replace auto glass, including windshields, door windows, rear windows, and side mirrors if damaged.
